Wash & Care For Your Hair Type
Dry/Thick/Frizzy/Curly/Afro Hair
Oh my goodness, where to start ! Whether you have dry hair, frizzy hair, curly hair, afro hair or a mixture of all these, this hair type has to be the hardest to control ever ! I have dry, thick, frizzy, curly, unmanageable hair - or should I say had until about a year ago. I battled for years with my hair, it kind of looked like a blonde highlighted version of the Jackson Five afro and I'm not kidding.
I washed it every day ( first mistake ). I just didn't feel right unless I shampooed and conditioned my bone-dry frizzy hair every single day without fail.
Then I learned that one of the golden rules with curly hair is to shampoo it as least as possible. Curly hair lacks moisture because the hair's natural sebum has a much harder job trying to travel from the scalp to the hair tip to moisturise it due to all those kinks. Especially when being washed every day, the hair's natural lubricant is stripped away before it can do its job.
Curly hair is extremely delicate as every bend on every curl is a break just waiting to happen. I recommend only washing this hair type when necessary - once a week at the most, with a completely natural shampoo ( containing no sodium laurel/laureth sulphates ) followed by a super smoothing conditioner to lock moisture into the hair - and don't even think about using a hairdryer or it's all over !
Almost all shampoos these days contain SLS ( sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate ). Check your shampoo bottle. Chances are it's one of the top ingredients listed which means it makes up a high percentage of the those ingredients. One of the first uses for SLS was as an industrial degreaser. Yes, you're washing your hair with stuff that's strong enough to strip oil from an engine ! Lovely. And people wonder why their hair is dry !
The harsh chemicals used in most standard shampoos ( even the pricey ones) , coupled with the fact that most people overwash their hair, results in retardation of hair growth. Have you noticed how many people these days use hair extensions because their hair just doesn't seem to grow fast enough. Washing it every day in industrial cleaner could well have something to do with that.
Anyway, back to my Jackson Five afro. Once I learned to wash my hair only once a week and use completely natural, gentle products my hair was transformed ! I kid your not. It sounds too simple I know, but I tried a shampoo called Aubrey Organics White Camellia Shampoo, followed with Aubrey Organics White Camellia Ultra-Smoothing Conditioner and I have never looked back.
Having spent a lifetime trying all sorts of hair products, this is the only one I will use FOREVER. I hope they never change this because I'll be stuffed if they do. I can honestly say I've never used anything like it. Even after the first wash and condition, my hair didn't feel like my hair anymore.
You know how it is with dry, frizzy hair. You wash it, condition it and it feels all soft and lovely. It goes into lovely ringlet curls and it's just how you want it to stay. Then it starts drying, and as it dries, it puffs, and frizzes, and it's so annoying because you know how beautiful it would be if it would just stay in those lovely curls.
Well, my once dry, coarse, frizzy, unruly hair is now long ( it's grown about 8 inches in the last year ) soft and curly with no frizz! I have heavily highlighted hair as well, making it even more prone to breakage and frizz, but it's all a thing of the past now. My hair is so strong. I wash it once a week with shampoo & conditoner and the rest of the time I just wash it with water to freshen it up.
If you decide to follow this plan you will probably notice that for the first couple of weeks, if you have been washing your hair every day in the past, your hair may become a bit oily at the roots until the oil glands in your scalp settle down and stop producing so much oil. They have been producing lots of oil in the past due to the constant shampooing, but after a couple of weeks your hair will return to normal.
Remember when choosing hair products that they should be 100% natural hair products. You should be aiming to use 100% natural shampoo and 100% natural conditioner. These products are so much kinder to your hair , and often they are cruelty-free because they are chemical-free and totally natural. Check the ingredient list. If it's all natural, that's the one to buy.

I recommend washing once or twice a week with a completely natural shampoo and conditioner.

Oily Hair
Hair that gets oily quickly often tends to be fine and limp as well, which weighs it down. Oily hair that is thicker is easier to deal with as the oily roots are not as noticeable due to the thickness of the hair.
The general rule here is to wash oily hair as least as possible, as every time you wash, you strip away the hair's natural sebum which moisturises and protects the hair. The more you wash this away, the more oil the scalp will make, making your hair oilier than ever. If you wash your oily hair every day, try reducing this to once every other day, and then once every 3 days. At first your hair will probably feel oilier than usual because of the frequency of washing that you have been doing previously.
Remember, the more you wash it, the more oil your hair will produce, making the problem worse. The idea is to gradually reduce the washing until you are eventually only washing/conditioning it once or twice per week. If that doesn't appeal , you can always rinse your hair through with plain water in between washes to freshen it up.
Now a note about shampoos and why they dry out your hair.
Almost all shampoos these days contain SLS ( sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate ). Check your shampoo bottle. Dry/Fine Hair
Hair that is dry and fine needs gentle care to prevent breakage.
One of the golden rules for naturally beautiful, healthy looking hair is to shampoo it as least as possible. When hair is washed every day, the hair's natural lubricant is stripped away before it can do its job.
Then you only have to take a look at what's in most of the shampoos these days to find the root of the problem.
