To determine your face shape, look in the mirror and pull your hair off your face, keeping it tucked behind your ears. Next, using a lipstick, carefully trace the outline of your face onto the mirror. The shape you get will be your basic face shape.
Alternatively, you can use the free Stellure Face Shape Wizard below to determine your face shape.
While some of us have one of the face shapes listed below, many of us are a mixture of face shapes.
Heart shaped faces are wider at the forehead, with a narrow jawline and a small pointy chin.
To balance this face shape, a soft, full or partial fringe takes attention and width away from the wide forehead.
Soft waves or curls from the cheek-line downwards give the illusion of width at the jawline.
Jaw-length to long styles suit this face shape best.
Long wavy layered hair styles are great as long as the curls or waves are from the cheek-line downwards.
Avoid short styles.
Avoid full, blunt fringes.
Oval faces are slightly wider at the cheekbones than the forehead and chin. Usually the face length is one and a half times the width.
Generally considered the most versatile face shape as it suits most styles. Lucky you !
Round faces are wide at the cheeks with a round chin. The face is generally as long as it is wide.
The best hairstyles to lengthen a round face are long styles, which work best with this face shape, as they give the illusion of a longer, slimmer face. Layers and height on the top gives the illusion of a longer face. Straight, long styles are best.
Short hair styles for round face shapes should be layered on the top to add height, with minimum volume at the sides.
Avoid waves and curls at the sides as they add width.
Avoid volume at the sides as it adds width.
Square faces are wide at the forehead, with an equally wide, strong square jawline.
Square faces benefit from soft, layered styles. Curls and waves soften the outline of the face, therefore softening the angles.
As square face shapes are generally fairly wide, long styles tend to flatter this face shape well as they give the illusion of a longer, slimmer face. Soft layers around the face soften the outline, but try to keep the volume at the sides to a minimum as it adds width. Side partings work well. Layers work best.
A long wavy layered hair style with minimum width at the sides would work well for this face shape.
Shorter styles should be layered, with height and volume on the top and minimum volume at the sides. Soft layers that frame the face on short styles work well as they soften the jawline.
Avoid long, straight hair as it is too harsh for a square face, and will make the jawline appear more angular.
Avoid fringes at they draw attention to a wide, angular jawline.
Avoid centre partings.
Avoid all-one-length styles.
Rectangle face shapes are long and narrow, with a square, angular jawline.
Fringes work well with a rectangular face shape as they shorten the length of the face, making it appear wider.
Curls and waves with plenty of volume at the sides add width, and soften the jawline. Mid-length, wavy styles work best. Short styles with soft layers that frame the face are fine, but be sure to keep the volume at the sides and not on the top.
A long wavy layered hair style would work, as long as the style has plenty of volume and width at the sides.
Avoid long styles, unless they are curly and full of volume at the sides.
Avoid long, straight styles. They will make the face look longer and your jawline more angular.
Avoid no-fringe styles. They make the face look longer.
Avoid volume on the top. It adds length to the face.
Avoid short one-length bobs.
Long face shapes are long and narrow (as with the rectangle face shape) but with a soft jaw line and a pointy chin.
Fringes work well with a long face shape as they shorten the length of the face, making it appear wider.
Curls and waves with plenty of volume at the sides add width. Jawlength, curly or wavy styles work very well with a long face shape as they give the illusion of a shorter, wider face, as well as width at the jawline.
Long wavy layered hair styles are fine, but be sure to keep lots of volume and width at the sides.
Avoid long styles, unless they are curly and full of volume at the sides.
Avoid long, straight styles. They make the face look longer and thinner.
Avoid no-fringe styles. They make the face look longer.
Avoid volume on the top. It adds length to the face.
Avoid short one-length bobs.
Avoid very short styles.
Diamond face shapes are wider at the cheek-line and narrower at the forehead and chin.
No-fringe styles, with fullness at forehead level and chin level work well, but be sure to keep minimum volume at cheekbone level. As the chin needs widening, a style that has plenty of width and fullness at chin level works well with a diamond face shape.
Avoid fringes.
Pear face shapes have a narrow forehead with a wide jawline and a round chin.
No-fringe styles, with fullness at forehead level make the forehead appear wider, balancing it with the jawline.
Minimum volume at jaw level is necessary here, to slim the jawline. Short styles work well. Styles that are layered with plenty of fullness at temples, and tapered at the jaw flatter a pear face shape. Side partings are good.
Avoid long styles.
Avoid fringes.
Hairstyles For Women With Big Noses
Generally speaking, if you have a big nose you should wear your hair curly or wavy, as this softens the features. I have a fairly strong nose myself, and although it isn't particularly big, it is strong, which is not particularly feminine. I have naturally curly hair, and if I straighten it, although my hair looks lovely, it tends to make my nose look bigger, as straight hair styles tend to make the features appear harder.
Wavy layered hair styles work well here, allowing for plenty of movement and texture ( taking attention away from the big nose).
So the golden rule for women with big noses is to keep it curly or at least wavy, and stay away from straight styles.
