To be physically and mentally healthy, we need to be using our mental and physical abilities equally throughout the day. Do you feel that you want to get into shape, or are you already in shape but you want to be even fitter?
Do you feel too tired to work out? Tiredness is a real killer to your motivation when you're thinking about getting on the running machine, but are you just mentally tired?

Being mentally tired is a different thing from being physically tired, but it makes you feel completely drained of energy because your mental output and physical output are not in balance.

I discovered this some years ago when I had a highly ( mentally ) stressful office job. The company I worked for paid for all employees to have a free health screening. At that time, although I have always loved physical exercise and keeping myself in shape, I was so stressed by my work and other things going on in my life at that time, that I didn't feel I had the energy to get through the day let alone workout afterwards. So I wasn't doing anything physical.

When I had the health screening, I was told that I felt so exhausted because my mental output was so high ( my mentally stressful job, my personal life was causing me mental stress etc) and my physical output was so low.

My mind and my body were out of synch. Because I was using my mental abilities to the extreme and my physical abilities hardly at all, my brain was taking all that mental stress without any kind of break. That's why I felt so tired.

The health official advised me to take regular exercise, at least three times per week.
'But I'm exhausted' I told her. 'I'm too tired to workout these days'.
She explained that if I worked out regularly, it would bring my physical levels up on the same level as my mental levels. She told me that although I felt exhausted, by body wasn't physically tired, it was all mental tiredness.

I took her advice. Well, I couldn't feel any worse! The result - I felt like a new person ! The first time I thought about working out after work I didn't know if I could be bothered as I felt so drained. I didn't know how or if I would get through the workout. But hey, when I got to the gym and started, not only did I get a surge of fresh energy as my body began to wake up from it dormant lifestyle, but I noticed I felt so much better mentally too. By the end
of my first workout I felt so much better.

I continued with my workouts regularly and felt so much better than I thought I could have done at that time.
I exercise regularly to this day, although these days I prefer to work out at home with a DVD, or listen to music or a fitness workout on my mp3 player.

Pilates

Pilates is a method of body conditioning, designed as a system of exercises which combine stretching,  strengthening and control.

I have a wonderful Pilates book which comes with an instructional DVD called Pilates The Authentic Way by Dina Matty and Keft Burdell. When I first bought this book, it looked really easy,but it really puts you through your paces.This particular book and DVD seem to be quite hard to get hold of now, but there are plenty of others.























I would definately recommend purchasing a book with a DVD, as I feel you really do need an instructor helping you along. Stand-alone DVD's are great too.
